Ramadan refuses to separate between the “them” and “us”, ‘I am Muslim, and I am also Western; therefore I am a Western Muslim.’ My faith is part of my identity, and so is my citizenship. Muslims have assimilated and continue to do so every day, and those who have not, must do so.
This assimilative rhetoric has become widespread amongst the so-called “modern” Muslims; scholars and populous alike. For many of the second, third or even fourth generation Muslims residing in
What will these attempts to assimilate and integrate lead to? Will Muslims become active members of Western society? And can faith and citizenship be amalgamated within a single entity?
The responses to these questions will vary according to each person’s view/understanding of Islam. Those, such as Ramdan et al., will continue to propagate an integrationist perspective. Others, who view the world in “abode of Islam” and “abode of war” terminology will emphasise the need for Muslims to “return” to “Islamic countries” and insist on the impossibility of being a “Western Muslim”.
One recalls the Dreyfus affair which occurred in
Until our present day, Zionism insists on its racist and discriminatory ideology—not my words but those of the UN General Assembly resolution no. 3379 which states that ‘Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination’. The Jews have achieved their dream state, their racist state. Is this what the Muslims want? An Islamist Zionism?
But if—God forbid—the calls of Mort au Musulman are heard, then what are we to do?

I read your article over and over just to make sure I do not misunderstand any part of it.
It is important for you to define the important cornerstones that you argue about. In this case, you must clearly determine what you mean by the word Western. Especially in your phrase "western Muslim". What do you mean by western? Do you mean a Muslim that upholds western values? that is surely contradictory in the wholistic sense. Or do you mean A Muslim who has a western country citizenship? or a Muslim who lives in the west? Each definition leads to a different route and hence a different conclusion.
The categorization of countries into the abode of Islam and abode of Kufr or Harb is an Islamic legal categorization. It is crucial as many Islamic laws are affected by this categorization. Not everyone who adheres to this categorization call for the return of Muslims to Muslim countries. Hijra or immigration is only incumbent when a Muslim in the west feels he or she can not perform his or her religious duties in light of the laws, inhabitants or political situation in that country.
Islam is by far less racist than both judaism or christianity. History proves that. Islamic empires in the past proved that. Yes, there are exceptions. But generally speaking we as Muslims by far undermatch jews in racism.
Muslims also, without doubt, dream of re-assembling their empire. Why is this racist?
About urging Muslims to be active members of society; well, to put simply: they are!!!
Why do those thinkers have to urge Muslims to be active members of society? Muslims are in schools, they are doctors, they are taxi drivers, they are shop owners, they are cashiers and sadly they are also in fields that are forbidden by Islam such as bartending etc.
So, instead for calling for total activity, these "thinkers" should call for activity that does not collide with Islam just as they are calling for an Islam that does not collide with western identity.
Forget all that, and remember the words of Allah:
2:120: And the Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Christians until you follow their religion. Say: Surely Allah's guidance, that is the (true) guidance. And if you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you shall have no guardian from Allah, nor any helper. (Shakir)
As with regards to Herzl, you must read between the lines my friend. This racist state was not formed as a revenge on the west. Nor was it formed without their consent. Everyone knows the role of the British in the formation of Israel. Herzl said himself:
"The antisemites WILL BECOME our most loyal friends, the antisemites nations will become our allies." (One Palestine Complete, p. 47)
His goals for forming this state was also shared by the west, in fact even needed. Herzl noted:
"We can be the vanguard of culture against barbarianism." (One Palestine Complete, p. 150)
anyhow, intersting article.
Salam Hamid83,
Thank you for your comment.
The term ‘Western’ may hold different meanings according to the user’s desire. As I see it, a Western Muslim is someone who is Muslim by faith, but Western by citizenship.
I understand that the abode of Islam and abode of Kufr (and the various other abodes that exist) are part of an Islamic legal categorisation. I agree, not everyone who adheres to this categorisation will be calling for the return of Muslims to Muslim countries; I should have clarified that in my article.
“Islam is by far less racist than both Judaism or Christianity”. I wholeheartedly agree with that. It is very rare to find a religion that preaches racism, often it is the followers who twist religious text to serve their own racist desires.
“Muslims also, without doubt, dream of re-assembling their empire. Why is this racist?” I never said it is. Though I do have reservations about using the term a Muslim/Islamic Empire! Can’t think of a better oxymoron!
Thanks for the feedback.

Tarik
